The transitional proposal for the Republic of Niger was revealed as a hoax by the Economic Community of West African States on Thursday.

According to the widely circulated claim, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who is also the leader of the West African ECOWAS group, urged on Thursday that the new government in Niger make the same nine-month transition back to democracy as Nigeria did in the 1990s after military rule.

However, the Commission denounced the stories as false news in a statement sent through its X account.

The group also denounced as bogus the French-language material that was circulated on Agence France-Presse platforms.
The statement said, “A report of a purported ECOWAS recommended transition timeline for Niger has come to the knowledge of the ECOWAS Commission.

“The French-language item, which purports to be carried by AFP, is untrue and ought to be regarded as fake news.

The military authorities of Niger are required to quickly restore constitutional order by releasing and reinstalling H.E. Excellency President Mohamed Bazoum, according to the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government.
